Research Report: Listening on the Move

Does our mode of transportation influence the music we listen to? During my master’s in Culture & Communications in the Creative Industries at Université Paris 8, two classmates and I set out to get an answer.

For the research project, we interviewed people about what they actually listen to on the metro, in the car, on a bike, on a plane, or when walking and asking them why.

The result was a 20-page report on l’Écoute nomade, listening on the move.

Taking Antoine Hennion’s work on music listening behaviors as a starting point, we reviewed existing research, set out our hypotheses and method, and then worked through the interviews to four reasons people score their own journeys.

Once we were done writing, I volunteered to put it all together and make it look good.

I laid it out as something people would want to read rather than a stack of double-spaced pages: full-bleed photographs of people listening in transit, quiet translucent panels for the titles, and the interview quotes pulled out of the body text so the voices carry the story.

"Alesa joined Urbansider at the very beginning of the project and immediately made her mark: a true talent for words and web writing, a thorough understanding of editorial issues, and a great rigor in her work. She now orchestrates all components of content mangement on the platform - writing and publishing of articles, coordinating the community of contributors, editorial planning - with a high level of professionalism. I am infinitely grateful to her for everything that she has brought to Urbansider."

 Guillaume Labendzki, fondateur Urbansider

"I am quite taken by the copy, thank you for the good work. It feels so great to be in good hands, to have someone get what's in your brain and put it in words beautifully; I am very grateful."

– Géraldine Zanaska, Founder Compass Music & Lighthouse

"We needed a brand new website to better promote our rock band. Alesa knew how to quickly optimize the presentation of our site by giving a professional look all while staying faithfaul to the identity of our project."
